If anyone should be an inspiration to the legions of non-Latin Europeans dutifully signing on for GCSE salsa classes, Larry Harlow should. Jewish, and the son of a band leader and an opera singer, Harlow veered abruptly towards Latin street music, rather than jazz or the classics at the Music Art High School in New York in the 1950s. “We were right beside Spanish Harlem - I used to listen to the music in the Latino grocers shops.” In the 1960s and 1970s his novel rearrangements of trombone, trumpet, violin and flute sections moved him to the centre of New Yorks Latin scene, working with artists like Johnny Pacheco, Ray Barreto and Willie Colon, the generation whose tough new hybrid sound first came to be called salsa. Harlow was the first artist to be signed by the seminal Fania label, co-wrote the Latin rock opera Hommy (Mark 2 version on the way), played for the famous Mohammed Ali-George Foreman fight in Zaire (a fiasco: everyone came for the fight, not the concert). The last decade has been spent with his own band touring the world.

(ProQuest Information and Learning:. denotes formula omitted.) The first way MCOs game their participating chiropractors is by holding them to either an arbitrary maximum number of treatments or a maximum number of treatments that comes from internal proprietary data. We have all heard from some colleague who has been reprimanded, put in a more restrictive provider tier or even removed from a panel because his or her average number of visits is higher than the MCOs average. I heard this from a colleague who only had five patients, with an average of nine visits per patient.

ExerciseParticipation in physical activity can be beneficial for anyone and can be started during any stage of life. One goal of Healthy People 2010, a set of national health objectives established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is to increase the number of people who participate in daily physical activity. This activity can take many forms, ranging from a regimented exercise program to daily life activities such as house or yard work, walking a pet, or walking around town to complete errands.
Youve heard it before: Exercise is good for the body. Now, scientists have found that its also good for the brain. How does a workout stretch the brain? Robert Sweetgall, a fitness expert who has walked more than 112,654 kilometers (70,000 miles) in his lifetime, explains: Exercise helps oxygenate (supply oxygen to) the brain. [The supply] makes it function better. Thats because when you exercise, your heart beats faster, pumping more oxygen-filled blood to the body. Like all cells, the brains neurons (nerve cells) rely on oxygen to keep your mind working.
For people who dont exercise regularly, accumulated, short bouts of exercise are more effective than continuous exercise in lowering fat and triglyceride levels in the bloodstream after eating, reports new research presented in the August 2004 issue of Medicine Science in Sports Exercise. Researchers believe each short exercise bout may provide a slight increase in metabolism. The research team from Southwest Missouri State University and University of Missouri emphasizes these results are only applicable to people not participating in regular exercise. It is unknown at this time whether 30 minutes performed continuously or intermittently is adequate to reduce fat in the bloodstream for those who exercise regularly.

Theres one part of Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America lnc.s Irvine headquarters most visitors dont get to see. Its dubbed “the torture chamber.” Before Mitsubishi engineers sign off on the production of a big-screen TV, prototypes are put through the wringer. Even after engineers give the go-ahead to make a set, TVs undergo more grueling endurance tests. In one room, big-screen TVs are slowly cooked until they fail. Each day, the rooms temperature is fatcheted up by 1 degree and the humidity is increased 2% until it reaches 100%
Televisions, which are found in over 95% of American homes, are often located in areas where children spend a lot of time. Their design makes them unstable — most of their weight is located in the front of the picture tube, making them easy to tip forward. Their controls are located in the front, easily within the reach of inquisitive toddlers. During a seven year period, over 73 cases of toppling TVs were reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Twenty-eight of these children died from their injuries. The average age of the injured children was 36 months, with the ages ranging from one month to 11 years.
LAS VEGAS — When it comes to televisions, bigger is better. But for most other gadgets, thin is in. Thats the consensus of electronics manufacturers and industry analysts in Las Vegas this week for the annual Consumer Electronics Show. Roughly 110,000 visitors are gawking at wares ranging from a flat-screen television slightly bigger than Michael Jordan to a digital camcorder roughly as small as a Pez dispenser.

When goals are not reached or the progress toward them is unsatisfactory, people have impaired performance and often tend to abandon their attempt to achieve the unreachable goals. To improve the understanding of the weight loss expectations of obese subjects and of the factors that influence them, some Italian researchers analyzed the data of a large observational study that was recently established in Italy for a comprehensive measurement of health-related quality of life, psychological distress, and eating behavior in obese patients. A total of 1891 obese patients seeking treatment in 25 Italian medical centers were included in this study. Diet and weight history, weight loss expectations and primary motivation for seeking treatment (health or improved appearance) were recorded via a detailed case report and a set of questionnaires. Psychiatric distress, binge eating, and body image dissatisfaction were tested by self-administered questionnaires (Symptom CheckList-90, Binge Eating Scale and Body Uneasiness Test).
A recent investigation set out to test a novel approach to sustaining long-term contact with individuals after participation in a structured behavioral weight loss program. Two hundred and fifty-five (209 women and 46 men) overweight and obese adults were recruited through newspaper advertisements for participation in the study. Criteria for participation included age over 18, BMI greater than or equal to 25 kg/[m.sup.2], and a computer with adequate memory and connection speed. All subjects participated in an identical 6-month behavioral weight control intervention conducted over interactive television (ITV). Following weight loss, subjects were randomly assigned to one of three weight maintenance conditions: 1) Internet support (IS); 2) frequent in-person support (F-IPS); 3) minimal in-person support (M-IPS). All subjects were seen for assessment measures at baseline and at 6 months, 12 months, and 18 months. Main outcome measures included body weight, program adherence, and social influence components. There were no significant differences among the groups in weight loss (mean [+ or -] SD) from baseline to 18 months (7.6 kg [+ or -] 7.3 kg vs. 5.5 kg [+ or -] 8.9 kg vs. 5.1 kg [+ or -] 6.5 kg, p=0.23 for the IS, M-IPS, and F-IPS, respectively).
Because weight control is big business, countless numbers of bogus quick weight loss plans are available. Kay Stanfill, a registered dietician at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, offers some advice on how to determine the truth about weight loss: Does the plan require that you do absolutely nothing? (Lose weight while you sleep, etc.) “Losing weight without any effort is a fantasy that we all share. But if a person is trying to be healthy, he or she will have to learn to change ingrained behaviors–namely eating and exercising habits.”

For years, Remodeling magazines annual “Cost vs. Value Report” has offered comfort to homeowners investing hefty dollars into home improvement projects. The high payback on the most popular rehabs - kitchens and bathrooms - has even been the catalyst to spur some homeowners to remodel. They felt confident that if they did good work, theyd get back most of their funds. Does this mean that homeowners should stop renovating? Hardly, especially when they have a distinct vision of how they want their home to look and function - and if they have the funds. But decreasing numbers suggest greater caution:

In Japan, textile products in a new category helpful to beauty and health have made their appearance. Fuji Spinning Co., Ltd. (Fujibo) has commercialized its vitamin-finished fabric “V-UP” and that was the start of this phenomenon. Subsequently, each firm has presented textile products with aromas to create a good feeling or with special ingredients to make the burning of fat easier. Later, this boom disappeared. Then in 2001, Fujibo announced “V-UP”. Its catch phrases in selling were “wearing vitamins” and “Vitamin C-formulated fabrics.” Vitamin C keeps the generation of melamine in the human body under control and exhibits skin whitening effects. Vitamin C functions to promote the synthesis of collagen and to restrain the decomposition of collagen, while it is effective in preventing wrinkles on the skin. The anti-oxidation effects exhibited by the sebum can also ward off sunburn. Even so, Vitamin C itself is unstable because it is weak against heat and oxidizes against light. Consequently, a pro-vitamin which precedes Vitamin C is used in manufacturing.
UNION, N.J. — Bed Bath Beyond is putting more might behind the Beyond part of its name to grow its business. Its acquisition in March 2002 of Harmon Discount, a chain of 27 health and beauty stores located in the New York tri-state area, gave the home goods retailer a foothold in beauty. The company has since outfitted a select number of its stores with HBC departments, a much faster-turning category then its core offering. And while it is not in Bed Bath Beyonds nature to outline strategy, the retailer has remained committed to Harmon as a stand-alone concept, opening at least three freestanding Harmon stores over the last two years. Of course, Harmons new-store opening rate runs at a snails pace next to Bed Bath Beyonds rate of 80 to 90 new stores ,or next year. Bed Bath Beyond also has retained the HBC retailers management team, which is now housed in Bed Bath Beyonds Union, N.J., corporate headquarters.

E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Little present recently on CNBC: 1) A typical banking transaction, which costs one dollar, will only cost one cent when conducted over the Internet! 2) A typical brokers transaction, which costs $150, will only cost $6 when conducted over the Internet!

The acres of carpeting at a typical hotel represent a significant expense, and most hoteliers prefer to keep that investment looking as good as possible for as long as possible. Typically, hotel staff members clean carpeting, according to Greg Rosenblatt, administrative manager for Stark Carpets.
After the death of his sister, Rebecca, four years ago, Jaym Wolfe considered abandoning the carpet-cleaning trade in which he had worked for more than two decades. Instead, his sorrow led him in another direction. This past summer, Wolfe founded a new business, TerraClean Eco-effective Carpet Care, which uses cleaning solutions that are nontoxic and environmentally friendly.
Consumers are dragging out their vacuums up to four times a week to clean up small messes, according to Procter Gamble. Now the pioneer of the quick-clean category is positioning its newest offering as an easier solution. We talked with consumers about their overall cleaning needs and wants. Carpet was one area that had a lot of dissatisfaction, including dragging out a heavy vacuum for every little bit you find on the floor, said Dawn Capper, Swifter assistant brand manager. Once we had that initial insight, we researched what kind of tool we could put out there that would solve those needs and still fit within our overall Swifter category.

The joys of flying on your birthday have been much discussed in this column: cakes, champagne and even upgrades can be laid on for the celebrant. But Kate Thorman of Oxford found that becoming 12 provided her with a Catch-22 problem. “So, on the one hand Kate is old enough to pay the adult fare, but on the other hand she is too young to travel without a paid escort,” says her exasperated father. At this point, Mr Thorman gave up and booked with another airline; then poor Kate found her birthday flight delayed by four hours at Birmingham airport.

As a family man and an electrical engineer, Rick Taylor wouldnt consider himself a trendy type of guy. And yet when he spent $7,500 recently for a do-it-yourself kitchen remodel in his Corona, Calif., tract house, he followed some strong trends in the home improvement industry.
As your familys needs change, so should your home. This Dallas kitchen had been remodeled three times prior to this update to accommodate changing needs. Each previous owner was careful to stay true to the homes original design, and it was equally important to current residents Kathy and Sam Leake that they respect that tradition as well. They worked to open up the room-improving both the amount of natural light and traffic flow. Plus, attractive design details give the space a cozier feel.
Not every remodel is a total success. Roughly eight years ago, this little Sacramento farmhouse underwent a front-side remodel that gave the former owners neede floor space but destroyed its charming bunglow character. To restore a bit of the houses original style while creating a new garage and maste suite, designer Brent Smith of Loomis, California, developed the facade you see on the facing page. Current owners Susan and Tim Bloom added a few of their own ideas and did much of the finish work themselves. Borrowing from heavily framed Craftsman-era facades, Smith designed an unusual and striking pergola of round wooden poles–used as columns and overhead–to accent and stretch the horizontal plane of the house and better define the entry. He also added a broad, fenced-in entry deck that wraps around one side of the house, and two new gables–one above the existing bay window and one sheltering the front door.

These dainty Chinese dumplings are quick to make because you start with purchased potsticker skins, available in most markets along with won ton and egg roll skins. For the versions here, you fold the potsticker wrappers around a seasoned seafood filling instead of one of the more typical meat mixtures. Offer seafood potstickers as a hot appetizer, or serve as a light entree with a green salad. At the table, each person blends to taste a dipping sauce based on vinegar flavored with soy sauce and as much hot chili oil (sold in Asian markets) as desired.

Iron County prosecutors will now decide if a deadly stabbing during a home invasion was an act of self-defense. On Monday, the Iron County Sheriffs Office wrapped up its investigation into the stabbing death of C.J. Harris. The 19-year- old was stabbed in the back with a 6-inch hunting knife during a break-in at the home of Steve and Maria Barnhardt. “Its my feeling that no charges will be filed,” Iron County Sheriff Mark Gower told the Deseret Morning News. “I think that well see its a justifiable use of deadly force.”

According to the American Diabetes Association, the incidence of diabetes increased by more than 60 percent from 1990 to 2001. The number of Americans with diabetes is growing by an alarming eight percent per year and the disease is the single most prevalent chronic illness in children. Symptoms of type 1 diabetes include increased thirst and urination, constant hunger, weight loss, blurred vision and extreme tiredness.
The combination of type 1 diabetes and anorexia nervosa has “dire consequences” in terms of excess mortality for women, reported Dr. Soren Nielsen of the University of Copenhagen and associates. Over the 10-year follow-up period, there were 13 deaths among the 510 women with type 1 diabetes, 43 deaths among the 658 with anorexia nervosa, and 8 deaths among the 23 with both diagnoses. Type 1 diabetes was listed as the cause of death for all eight deaths among the women with concurrent diagnoses.
Type 1 diabetes represents an absolute lack of insulin caused by a decrease in beta cell mass. It affects about 10% of the diabetic population and usually occurs before the age of 30. It is typically detected by an abrupt onset of symptoms of hyperglycemia. The affected patient is often prone to ketoacidosis, which occurs when accumulation of ketones (byproducts of fat metabolism) leads to acidosis, causing diuresis, dehydration, loss of electrolytes, and eventually renal failure, coma, and death. Type 2 diabetes is related to insulin resistance and a defect in insulin secretion. Sustained hyperglycemia is diagnostic of type 2 diabetes and occurs over a long period of time. Symptoms usually occur after the age of 30 but can occur at any age. Obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are primary factors of occurrence. Type 2 diabetes usually is not prone to ketoacidosis because some insulin is still produced. Treatment is centered on diet, exercise, weight loss, oral medications, and/or insulin as indicated, with careful monitoring of blood glucose levels by the patient and physician.

Meeting the core consumers need for replenishment items remains key, but dollar stores are working to address the desire for a little fashion that all consumers exhibit in these style-besotted times. For example, said Cindy Mazza, Dollar Generals dmm of household products, the chains customers can refresh their bathrooms by adding decorative and other fashion towels and mats that Dollar General offers. With the range of product available today, dollar store customers can combine replenishment items with a limited number of discretionary purchases. For example, a shopper might purchase some functional pieces in fashionable styles and colors and combine them with candles to enliven a tired room. “They can buy accessory items, update a look and provide fashion at a reasonable price,” said Mazza. Outdoor patio decorations and other seasonal items are strong at Dollar General, as are picture frames and art, wall boarders, shelves and sconces, candles and accent furniture. Lamps are coming on strong as well.

The Better Business Bureau in Colorado Springs is warning people to beware of scam artists called “travelers.” The term is given to people who go door-to-door and offer home repairs. The Better Business Bureau says they often leave homes in worse shape after a repair. The term “traveler” is given because they constantly move from city to city.
A bill requiring that home builders work quickly to fix any defects found by the new owners passed unanimously from a legislative committee on Thursday. Though the bill would appear to increase the responsibilities of the home builder, industry representatives strongly support the bill.
“As homeowners start the massive job of cleanup, repair fraud artists come out of the woodwork too,” Nixon said. “During the ice storm of 2002 and the floods of 1993 and 1995, we were able to head off potential scam artists by making people aware of the threat they pose. Homeowners, again, need to be cautious and make informed decisions about repairs.” A spokesperson with the National Consumer Law Center echoed this concern and explained that predatory home repair scammers typically target the elderly and lower-income individuals but are not shy about taking advantage of anyone in a vulnerable situation.

New developments in self psychology practice.
Yesterday, Robert Karlsson - in appearance he is not dissimilar to Jack Nicklaus Junior who designed the front nine holes here at Hanbury Manor, the back nine originating from Harry Vardon - shot 63 in the third round of the Compass English Open, having narrowly made the halfway cut, to skate up the leaderboard at 10 under par for the championship. He had nine birdies and no bogeys although it was not without incident. No leaderboard in Europe is safe from a Swede nowadays, whether it be Jarmo Sandelin, Per-Ulrik Johansson, Fredrik Lindgren, or a Karlsson. When Mark James, Europes Ryder Cup captain, keeps talking about his vegetable garden he may have an unpretentious swede in mind. Sandelin, fourth in the points table, is on course to make his Cup debut against the United States in Boston in September and Robert Karlsson, currently 12th and about to improve on that, is also in the running. Yet a few years ago, he was so confused he was tempted to give up the game. “The more I practised the better I got and the better I got the worse I would play in tournaments,” Karlsson said. “It was unbelievably frustrating. I didnt know what I was doing. I worked with a psychologist until he told me he couldnt help me any longer. He gave me the name of a therapist.” In the archipelago about two hours outside Stockholm, Karlsson began attending the group therapy sessions of a man called Bengt Stern. “He does a lot of work with cancer patients and he takes a very broad approach. It isnt just about sitting and talking. I wasnt getting anything out of golf and I was developing destructive patterns on the course and elsewhere. Bengt has bone marrow cancer and seven years ago he was told he had two months to live. He helps people to find out what happens to them under pressure.” It was in 1996 that Karlsson lost his way, dropping to 102nd in the Order of Merit. Since becoming the only golfer on Mr Sterns books (the therapist also works with round-the-world yachtsmen), Karlsson improved to 10th in the money list in 1997 and was 17th last year, winning more than pounds 600,000 in the two seasons. Karlsson, who is 29, went to the turn yesterday in 32 despite missing a three-foot putt at the eighth, and came home in 31, which would have been a 32 but for an extraordinary save on the par-three 16th. It is a fairly straightforward short hole, measuring 185 yards. There is no water but plenty of sand and a three-tiered green with a hollow in the middle. Karlsson shanked his six-iron tee shot and the ball travelled so far right it ended up on the 15th fairway. From there he couldnt see the green. What he needed was a compass but, with a sand wedge, somehow he negotiated all the trouble - banks, bunkers, tiers and hollow - and his ball finished three feet from the flag. Karlsson, who had opened his account by driving the green at the first hole, a par four of 347 yards, skipped lunch to take a slightly longer drive after his round, to Wembley to watch the football international between England and Sweden. He didnt have a ticket, but was prepared to invest in a touts self-development.

Like many suburb-dwelling Americans, I spent my teenage years skulking around the mall, my 20s sifting through the racks of every clothing store in town, and most of my 30s feathering the nest. Ive always enjoyed the sense of control I get from finding exactly what I want–and getting it. Theres not much we can do to opt out of consumerism altogether–not many of us are growing our own food or cobbling our own shoes, for instance. What we can do is make greener, smarter choices about what we buy–choices that will improve our lives and the lives of others. We can become more conscious consumers.

Business Editors Health/Medical Writers Bravo(TM) pH Monitoring System complements full
Deaconess Medical Center has begun using a new device for diagnosing acid reflux thats said to be more comfortable for patients than the equipment it had used previously. Margie Troske-Johnson, nurse manager of Deaconess gastrointestinal endoscopy laboratory, says the device, called the Bravo pH, is a pH testing system that measures levels of acid in a patients esophagus to determine whether acid reflux is occurring. A pH reading gauges the amount of acidity or alkalinity in a substance. A low pH reading suggests a high level of acidity.

A specialty furniture manufacturer and retailer will open a showroom this fall in the Village Park Shopping Center, filling part of the vacancy left by the June 1 closure of Bollingers Books. Dallas-based Leather Center is spending about $50,000 to renovate 5,000 square feet at 10505 N. May Ave. Leasing agent Carl Archiniaco, vice president of Harrison Levy Co., said he will target other home improvement merchants to fill the shopping centers vacancies. He is already talking with a gift shop and framing gallery.

BARTs 35-year-old tradition of carpeting train cars to bring luxury to mass transit apparently is headed for the scrap heap. Declaring carpet as dated, difficult to clean and too short- lived, the BART board agreed Thursday to spend some $2 million to replace carpet with a resin-based composite flooring on 200 of the 669 train cars.

Although the novice authors primary goal is to write a manuscript that is accepted, the experienced author may have a different goal–to write a feature article. Not all articles are the same. Editors and reviewers see many “acceptable” articles, but few outstanding, feature ones. It takes special emphasis by the author on both the topic and style to write a manuscript that is selected as a feature article for the journal. The author of this article, an experienced editor, describes the characteristics of a feature article and how it differs from others in his journal.
A colleague was recently told by his dean that to be promoted to professor, he needed to have more publications in the top three finance journals. Another colleague, an assistant professor at another university, was told that only articles in the top three journals would count towards his promotion and tenure decision. But the top three journals were not the same in these two cases. Assistant professors are often told that they need publications in the top three journals or top N journals.

“About 85% of our clientele is Hispanic and we speak other languages. We specialize in urban areas.” Perez credited the states auto insurance reforms for creating a competitive market for insurers that has led to lower premiums. “Before auto insurance reform, no insurance companies wanted to give appointments to agencies that deal with urban markets because of fear of fraud and stolen vehicles. Now there is an agency in Patterson able to provide private insurance.”

Readers of this newsletter and people who have talked to me in the last 25 years know Im a nut on display shelving for libraries - not just in the popular reading area, but throughout the library, even in the stacks. That idea, of course, came to me like a ton of bricks when I looked at the bookstores of the 1960s and 1970s, even before the advent of the megastores like Borders, and Barnes and Noble. But I was unable to find a company that made display shelving for libraries with steel or wood (fake or real). There were companies like the old Display Fixtures of North Carolina (?) which made some rather flimsy ones, and some of the steel shelving people sort of fooled around with the idea, unsuccessfully I think. No surprise, considering the conservatism of most library directors, and certainly architects, when it comes to shelving. I think they forget sometimes that publishers put millions of dollars into design of book covers, and then most of us hide them effectively by shelving spine out. Yes, I know, you need the storage space, but most libraries would boost their circulation a lot if they only shelved 20 percent of their titles face out.
Hafele America Co. Hafele Americas Arena Plus Shelving and Organizational System combines precisely measured melamine non-slip panels with highly polished steel for keeping items neatly organized, the company says. Arena Plus Shelving is available in hook-on baskets, base cabinet pullout units, 3/4 and full round shelves.

At first look, Eichhorn Jewelry store in downtown Decatur looks like hundreds of other jewelry stores in hundreds of other communities across the country with brightlylit show windows on either side of the front entrance to entice customers. Patrons first impression of the 35 yearold store is “WOW!” One-hundred yearold vertical display cases with huge windows that slide up on the north wall are expertly lit to highlight eclectic groupings of jewelry. Unlike most stores, the main showcases, the ones John Eichhorn started his business with in 1965, are situated in the center of the showroom rather than along the sides and are also antiques. The floor cases are from 1929 when Keller Jewelry was located in the Eichhorn building. The diamond sorting table in a back room is a 100-year-old wooden library table that was left behind by the previous owner of the building who was also a jeweler.

Just as some animals will offer in courtship a morsel of food, the bowerbird and others make gifts of feathers and flowers and all manner of colorful trifles. There can be tittle doubt that the first tokens of human affection were of a simitar nature and were worn as treasured souvenirs. With the recognition of the intrinsic qualities of shelfs and stones, the evolution of jewely had begun. In the Middle Ages patronage was largely in the hands of the church, and a good proportion of medieval jewelry is of a devotional nature. Not until the second half of the fifteenth century was there an emphasis on the aphrodisian themes of antiquity. The refinement of Italian Renaissance jewelry was a result of the broadly based apprenticeship of artists, which required a mastery of drawing, engraving, chasing, casting, enameling, and niello work. Thus Donatello and Ghiberti became sculptors, Ghirlandaio and Andrea del Sarto became painters, and Pollaiuolo and Verrocchio worked in several mediums, returning to goldsmith work and jewelry at will.

Nintendo is gearing up for the global rollout of its Game Boy Advance. The first of the handheld consoles to appear outside Japan will launch into the US this summer. Peter Main, executive vice-president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America, said: “Our existing portable system, Game Boy Color, remains the fastest-selling video game platform in America. Game Boy Advance will set brand new records.”
Wild birds and rabbits are the new name of the game on restaurant menus. Peter Owens tracked down the source in Central Otago. In the 186Os and 187Os game birds were released in the North and South Islands and on Stewart Island by publicly funded acclimatisation societies. Duck flourished and have continued to be the main game bird in New Zealand ever since. And with the exception of the rapid demise of grouse, other game birds have also remained. Pheasant was shot in the high country, as well as partridge, but not in large numbers and not often.

The Dog Bible
Sure, your dog can fetch the paper. But would she save you from a charging buffalo? Read on for a few tales-some true, some maybe tall-of famous canine heroes and villains. In January 1925 the deadly disease diphtheria struck Nome, Alaska. It was very contagious, but the town had no serum to treat it. So it was up to the Siberian Husky Togo and 20 sled dog teams to relay the medicine from another town, 674 miles away. The weather was brutal-several dogs froze-but Togos team traveled 260 miles, carrying the serum on the longest leg of the relay. Thanks to Togo and the other good dogs, the serum reached Nome just in time to save the town.

WASHINGTON — Dietary supplement and over-the-counter medications would have a new mandatory reporting system for any illnesses, death or other problems associated with their products, based on a bill introduced Wednesday by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. Under the bill, manufacturers, packers or distributors of over- the-counter drugs or dietary supplements would need to file a report to the FDA within 15 days of any reported incident of an adverse health effect specified in the bill such as death, inpatient hospitalization, birth defects and several others. They would also have to keep records for six years of any reported health problem, even if it is not under a “serious” one listed in the legislation.
Medical bills. We dread seeing them, we often complain about them and we really dont want to pay them out of our own pocket. For years, we counted on insurance paying our medical bills. But with changes in health care coverage today, we often pay a greater share of our medical bills, and were paying closer attention to them.

How to judge whether a child is ready for contact lenses. When will my child be old enough to wear contact lenses? This is a common question that many parents ask, but it doesnt have an easy answer. Parents often ask about contact lenses for their children because getting a child to wear his first pair of spectacles can be so difficult. Children often resist, so glasses get lost or broken. Parents are frustrated and search for options; they think contact lenses might be the solution.

A Sun Worshippers Guide to Natural Summer Skin Care The EPA attributes 80 percent of all sun damage to UVB rays, which are most often associated with sunburns. But UVA rays, though less damaging in the short term, are not to be ignored. They penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB rays, reaching the dermis directly and wreaking havoc by drying out sweat glands, altering your collagen and elastin, giving you permanent wrinkles and causing serious damage to the DNA of dermal cells.
Dr. Shupack: The treatment of acne starts with skin care. Dr. White: And proper cleansing could be considered the most basic step in skin care. You wash gently, with no vigorous scrubbing. Dr. Berson: It is an important part of treatment. I use different cleansing modalities depending on the patient.

This volume examines the psychological, social-relational, and cultural foundations of the most basic moral commitments. It begins by looking at the seminal writings of Augusto Blasi, whose writings on moral cognition, the development of self-identity, and moral personality have transformed the research agenda in moral psychology. This work is now the starting point of all discussion about the relationship between self and morality; the developmental grounding of the moral personality; and the moral integration of cognition, emotion, and behavior. Indeed, it is now widely believed that organizing self-understanding around basic moral commitments is crucial to the formation of a moral identity which, in turn, underwrites moral conduct. Using Blasis work as a point of departure, a distinguished interdisciplinary and international group of scholars have contributed essays summarizing their own theoretical and empirical research on these topics. This book features new theories of moral functioning that range across several psychological literatures, including social cognition, cognitive science, and personality development. Examining the social-relational, communitarian, and cultural aspects of moral self-identity, it provides a comprehensive account of moral personality.

SECURITY: VOIP is growing so fast that its reportedly leaving network security issues in the dust. A number of computer security experts told NewScientist.com last month that VoIP phones could be vulnerable to a number of familiar-sounding Net threats, from viruses and denial of service attacks to toll fraud, ID spoofing and even eavesdropping. But Vonage CTO Louis Mamakos insists that an attack on a VoIP phone would take an extraordinary amount of determination. For example, he told New Scientist, for VOMIT to work the eavesdropper would have to filter off all other traffic going through the Net and focus in on one call.
SECURITY: Hossein Eslambolchi, ATTs CTO and president of ATT Research Labs, is a big believer in packet networks, but warns that network security these days is so pitiful that a hacker today could bring down the entire Internet with 100 lines of code. Its almost impossible to scale by putting all the security at the end of the network. It just doesnt work, Eslambolchi said at last months Interop conference in Las Vegas, according to Light Reading. We need to go somewhere in between. an intelligent network with smart devices.
